sacred journeys:

Religious and Spiritual Lives

of trans & intersex people

Trans and intersex people have a long history of serving as spiritual healers, innovators, historians, and more. We say prayers and magic spells to care for one another. We enact rituals to mark our transformations. We find ways to unearth and preserve ancient traditions that have been lost or suppressed. Through artwork, we map out our unique sacred journeys through life–journeys of change, discovery, love, rejection, acceptance, celebration, and more.

In a world where trans and intersex people are often rejected from or tokenized within faith communities, SACRED JOURNEYS celebrates our creativity and recognizes the sacred nature of our lives.

Come visit SACRED JOURNEYS hosted at the Sharon and Brian Moore Alternative Space Gallery within First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin from May 4-July 5.

Please join us for a gallery opening on May 31st from 6-8pm at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin, featuring a Q&A with some of the artists featured in the gallery!

Empowering

Trans & Intersex

Artists since 2016

From visual art galleries, to music showcases, to poetry headliners, to installation art, to film nights, to drag performances, to comedy showcases, to art markets and picnics, to community choirs—we’ve always been light, adaptive, and imaginative!

We started as an art festival, grew to accommodate international talent, and evolved into a resilient community organization.

Affirming Art Events

Our events center the resilience and pride of trans and intersex artists. Not only do we showcase the brilliant creativity of local artists, but we also want our events to hold space for connecting, sharing, and leisure between community members themselves

By and For Community

Gender Unbound's leadership, organizers, and featured artists are all trans and intersex creatives. We pride ourselves in remaining deeply rooted in an ever-expanding community of artists and continuing to be responsive to what trans and intersex artists in Central Texas want and need.

Uplifting Artists

Pay artists while they're still alive! Gender Unbound works to create opportunities for trans and intersex artists to make money, get paid, extend their reach, hone their craft, and further their voice.

Awareness & Education

Through art, Gender Unbound invites public access to trans and intersex visibility through a nuanced, personal, and emotional lens. Allies, friends, and families of trans and intersex people are welcome at our public events to find opportunities to support and learn more about our communities and artists.
